Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul might be barred from non-cricket shows, BCCI issues notice

The BCCI on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to cricketers Hardik Pandiya and KL Rahul, seeking an explanation within 24 hours for their sexist and misogynist remarks on the Indian TV show Koffee With Karan.
The notice was issued hours after Pandya apologized on his official Twitter page for his comments on women, that triggered a huge outrage among fans from across the country. Hardik Pandya had boasted on the show about hooking up with multiple women, and when asked why he didn’t ask women their name in a club, Pandya responded by saying, “I like to watch and observe how they (women) move. I'm a little from the black side so I need to see how they move.”
While the Baroda all-rounder mentioned in the apology that he got carried away by the nature of the show, KL Rahul hasn’t responded to the criticism yet. The BCCI, however, weren’t convinced by the resigned statement and mentioned that the issue was far from over. A senior BCCI official added that an International cricketer needed to understand his duties and that his attitude reflected his respect towards the opposite gender. “This attempt at an apology does in no way bring the issue to closure. This merely shows how lightly he takes the gravely serious issue of respecting women. His conduct was unacceptable. He needs to understand the impact the utterances of an international cricketer have in this country but more importantly, he needs to learn how to differentiate between the right and the wrong. Right now he seems to merely respond to the outrage and not to his own thought process and conduct,” he said.
A BCCI source also reported that the officials were contemplating barring the players to participate in shows that have got nothing to do with cricket, henceforth.

It is time the BCCI decides to take corrective steps for cricketers who talk rubbish on public platforms. Hardik Pandya was a disgrace to the cricket community the way he spoke on Koffeewith Karan show. He has insulted the women and also made a racist remark.

It is all very well to issue show-cause notices now to KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya. But I do wish the BCCI spends time in sensitising these young players to life beyond the dressing room; to getting them outside the bubble that is inevitable given the adulation they get.

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are currently with the Indian team in Australia where a historic maiden Test series win was recently recorded. Pandya, who joined the Boxing Day Test after recovering from a back injury, will be part of the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia which starts on January 12 in Sydney.
