Karthik Subbaraj needs no introduction. Within a short span of time, the young director has gained a cult following of sorts, thanks to his unique cinematic approach in his films- raw, real and entertaining as well. As Karthik celebrates his birthday today, Indiaglitz wishes him a many more happy returns of the day!

His first short that earned him a spot at ‘Nalaya Iyakanur’ was ‘Kaatchipizhai’. His success in the TV show attracted opportunities his way, and Karthik as we know has handled them quite extraordinarily. His first feature was ‘Pizza’, a low-budget thriller that marked the entry of a meticulous filmmaker with exceptional storytelling power. Following the huge success(which was also a kind of springboard for Vijay Sethupathi), there was no stopping Karthik.

His next was ‘Jigarthanda’ which catapulted yet another star Bobby Simha to high praise and critical acclaims earning him a National Award even. Karthik’s ability as a writer was proved in the character of Assault Sethu, which had even impressed Superstar Rajinikanth who later expressed his wish that he’d have taken the role. 

 However, it was in ‘Iraivi’ Karthik strongly impressed the audience as a mature writer, artist and filmmaker with the film’s theme surrounding women. This third film also received critical acclaim for the director.

Now it seems like Karthik is ready for the next biggie with Superstar Rajinikanth himself which will be bankrolled by Sun Pictures. Meanwhile, the director is gearing up for the release of ‘Mercury’ starring Prabhu Deva in the lead role and the interesting detail to note here is that the film is a silent thriller. Seems like the director is set to break story telling tropes in Tamil cinema with innovative approaches.

Even though Karthik’s films vary in their projections, his quality as a filmmaker is beyond doubts a surety; which explains the unanimous adoration from serious movie buffs and commercial audience as well. And that is why his project with Superstar Rajinikanth will garner heavy anticipation to see how the director combines these two contrasting values for the Thalaivar.
