- IndiaGlitz, [Saturday,July 04 2015]
Six year old GVP first sang the opening lines of Chikku bukku railey' and also appeared in the song in Gentleman', clearly announcing to the world that he was going to ride a two horse sleigh the rest of his life. Today he is already one of the foremost music directors of South India and if the trailer and the response to Trisha Illana Nayanthara' is any indication, he is soon going to be the most sought after young actor who possesses the charm and the charisma to find his place in the big league. Here we get up close and personal with GVP for an exclusive with IG.
After a sedate start with Pencil' , You made a sensational star with Darling' and now Trisha Illana Nayanthara' trailer has become a super hit. Does this mean music will take a back seat?
No, I am the music director for the costliest Tamil Film currently, that is Illayathalapathy's Vijay 59'. So how can you say music takes a back seat.
How do you balance the two careers?
We don't shoot every day. We schedule twenty day shoot and the next ten days are free and I make music at that time. So that is not an issue.
Some heroes when doing a role don't do other films and don't even listen to other scripts because they want to concentrate on the character similarly since music requires more creative energy. How do you manage that?
I did the music for the three super hits of the year Darling', Komban' and Kaaka Muttai', while acting and the songs like Anbe Anbe' is a Chartbuster and Kaaka Muttai' songs are being played everywhere and it is some people's perception and each one has his own capabilities. As far as I am concerned, I can handle both acting and music and I have proved myself (I am not saying this with over confidence).
Within a decade you have completed 50 films. How do you feel about that?
I am very happy. I got committed for the film Veyil' in 2005 and it got released in 2006 and that is close to a decade and whenever I switch on any FM my song from that film Uruguthey maruguthey ', Veyilodu vilaiyadi ' or Kadhal nerupiniley ' is still being played. I have done 50 films out of which in 46 albums I have given at least two hit songs and only four albums would have flopped overall. I am not saying this also with over confidence, but just stating the statistics and I always try to give my best in whatever I do.
Tell us about any memorable event in your journey?
There are so any moments getting the opportunity to score for Veyil' under the banner of director Shankar sir, and at that time the company had given a hit movie Kadhal' the call came to me for making my debut and scoring for Rajini sir's film, Selvaraghavan's film, doing music for films like Madrasapatnam', Deivathirumagal', my three films with Anurag Kashyap Gangs of Wasepur' and its sequel and Ugly', Bala sirs movie (Paradesi').
You have worked with many first timers?
Vetrimaaran's debut Polladhavan' was my third film and Vasantha Balan's Veyil' was his second and my debut and none of us knew that these two films were going to be such big hits. My second film was a superstar film Kreedam' and I thank A. L. Vijay and Ajith sir, who had confidence in me and gave the opportunity as I was only nineteen at that time. There has been magic working with many first time directors Darling' directed by Sam Anton is among the top five highest grossing films of the year and the acclaimed Kaaka Muttai' is also by first timer Manikandan. Earlier A.L.Vijay, Vetrimaaran were first timers who worked with me and it is always been a fruitful experience with first timers.
My favorite out of all the fifty directors I have worked with is Anurag Kashyap.
What about Atlee?
When Atlee came to me for Raja Rani' he was a debutante and he is Shankar sirs assistant. He had made a short film titled Muga Puthagam' and when I heard the script I was very very confident about that script. Arya called me and asked me if he can do this film. I asked him to jump in with both eyes closed and assured him it would become a super hit. Now Adhik Ravichandran who is directing Trisha Illana Nayanthara' will also reach great heights.
You have a close personal relationship with Vetrimaaran and A.L.Vijay. What were their inputs when you turned hero?
Everyone told me not to do it. Our people do not have the guts to take risks and they want to travel only with what works. If you don't take risks you can never go to the next level in your life. When I was studying in my plus one I wanted to discontinue schooling many advised me to at least have a minimum degree. But I followed my heart, I became a music director and continued for ten years, then I branched into production and everyone asked me not to do it but I went ahead. When I made my acting debut, the entire industry advised me against it. When taking a step ahead there will be a lot of barriers, but you shouldn't mind about it. Even Vetrimaaran told me that it is a big risk and he didn't like me doing the film but when it became a hit he was the first person to call and inform me about it.
Tell us about the much awaited Trisha Illana Nayanthara'?
Trisha Illana Nayanthara' is a total nextgen film. It's a story that completely reflects the life of youth today. At certain times certain films come which will be perfect love stories like Kushi' and Siva Manasula Shakthi'. This is a love film for this time period and it has a lot of attitude which the boys and girls have today. The trailer is coming out on the 6th of July and Thanu sir, and Vijay sir who saw it loved it. Adhik Ravichandran the director will fill the space of directors like S.J.Suriya, Selvaraghavan and Rajesh in this generation.
How did the censors allow such dialogues in Trisha Illana Nayanthara'?
(Laughs) You have to ask the producer and the director about this. I am an actor and whatever the director asks me to do I do. I did not write the dialogues and anyway, this question is for the censor office
