Gulshan Devaiah: Our general mindset on sex is still rigidly colonial
Send us your feedback to audioarticles@vaarta.com
Bengaluru born Gulshan Devaiah who impressed us with his acting skills in 'That Girl In Yellow Boots', 'Shaitan', 'Hate Story' and 'Ram Leela' talks explicitly about sex and its rigid mindset in India, the Amol Palekar influence in his character Mandar Ponkshe in Hunterrr, his first real life encounter with a naked women, on Hunterrr being a coming of age story on sexuality, life and not an adult comedy.
Doing theater since 5, at 36 you play the lead in 'Hunterrr' - an unassuming sex addict
Am glad that Hunterrr came my way.. yes it`s exciting to play the lead protagonist. I have grown up doing Shakespeare, slapstick comedies etc. I thank Anurag Kashyap and the director of this film Harshavardhan Kulkarni for understanding me as an actor and casting me as the lead protagonist.
How much sex is there in 'Hunterrr'
Sex is an important tool in Hunterr but it`s not a sex comedy. It`s rather a coming of age story on sexuality, life of Mandar Ponkshe (Vasu).
It's given an A certificate and censor had asked for cuts. Your take.
A few re dubbing has being done which has not affected the film. First of all Hunterrr` is not a film for 18+, it`s for 15+ if you go by international ratings. Indian censorship guidelines are different and they generalize to make it an A` certificate for such films also. Hunterrr does not have double meaning dialogues or vulgarity.
Hearing a lot about the Amol Palekar influence to Mandar Ponkshe
When Harshavardhan Kulkarni gave me the script. Instantly the innocence and simplicity of Amol Palekar came into my mind. I shared it with him feeling that the mannerisms of Amol Palekar would be perfect for this middle class Indian casanova.
During this changing times in Bollywood, how far and near are we for something like Y Tu Mama Tambein the Mexican coming of age drama that used explicit sex as a medium to tell a story
Yes times are changing and there is scope for interesting innovations and experiments. Hunterrr does not wish to be torch bearer or changing face of bold Bollywood. As said earlier sex is used as a tool to tell a coming of age story. In my personal opinion it will take time for something like Y Tu Mama Tambein or Last Tango in Paris to happen in Bollywood. For such things to happen our general mindset on sex has to change.
What mindset on sex needs to be changed in the land of Kamasutra
Am sorry to be a bit political here but our mindset on sex is still dominated by the rigid pre independence norms prescribed under the colonial regime. This is a land of Kamasutra and still issues relating sex, nudity and love making scenes in our film keeps on popping up. Sex is still a taboo in our society. The parameter set during the British regime still gets followed.
The promos give a hint of school boy fantasies of women. A deja vu feeling for those who have grown watching Debonair magazines in India. Did you have any such experience as a teenager
Oh yes. My first encounter with naked women was when I was a teenager. A friend of mine showed me a Swedish magazine with nude photographs of women. It was for the first time I saw a completely naked women.
What was your reaction
I was pleasantly shocked. I thought he has brought a sports magazine with pictures of cricketers but whoa... later I started feeling guilty as it happens with all of us. For some time the thrill continued and as and when I started growing up I started understanding the true meaning of sex and love.
How many women does Vasu chases in 'Hunterrr' in his journey, does the unassuming sex addict finally in his lustful journey in life finds true love.
He chases many. And whether he finds true love or carries on hunting.. you will have to watch the film. It`s an interesting coming of age drama with sex as an added ingredient not the salt of the matter.
How will you define sex and love in one line
Sex is a physical need
Love is an emotional need
