A 19-year-old boy from Gujarat committed suicide by jumping into the Tapi river in Surat on Friday after his father repeatedly chastised him for going out during the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.
The deceased, identified as Ajay, would allegedly venture out often to meet his girlfriend and the nationwide lockdown did not stop him from going out. Angered by his attitude, Ajay's father would scold him for the same and would repeatedly ask him to stay inside the house, given the situation. On Thursday night, Ajay was severely reprimanded by his father after he returned home. He allegedly left the house soon after and his family registered a complaint with the police when he did not turn up the next day. They reportedly found Ajay's footwear on the Kapodra bridge.
The police retrieved Ajay's body a couple of hours later with the help from the team of Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) and found a suicide note inside his pocket, in which Ajay had asked his brother Chirag to take care of his parents.
