The GST Council has on Saturday reduced tax rates on cinema tickets of a certain cost. Tickets costing above Rs 100 will be taxed at 18% instead of 28%. And those costing below Rs 100 will be taxed at 12% instead of 18%.
The move has been welcomed by the film industry. Anupam Kher said, "This is a historic day for the Indian film industry that GST rates have been cut down from 18% to 12%. The credit for this move goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Films not only entertain but also boost tourism."
'Thugs Of Hindostan' star Aamir Khan said, "Heartfelt thank you to Honorable PM & the Govt of India for considering the request of the film industry for a reduction in GST. If Indian cinema hopes to compete in the world market then we need the support of the Govt & Administration. This is a great 1st step in that direction."
Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and several other film personalities have thanked the government.
