New York Times has reported that immunity to the coronavirus might last years or decades, as per a new, credible study. For months now, many have feared that the immunity may last only a few months, in which case COVID-19 might not have a solution at all. As per the study, as much as 90% of those infected once will not face a recurring infection.
Health journalist Apoorva Mandavilli of NYT has tweeted that nations probably will not need to vaccinate people every year if reinfections are very rare. Drawing a parallel with the survivors of SARS, she writes that human bodies have similar levels of immunity to COVID-19 as well.
"The vast majority of people in the new study have robust levels of B cells (which can make antibodies as needed), as well as the types of T cells needed to fight the virus, and they show extremely slow rates of decline — consistent with many years of protection," the reporter tweets out.
Vaccines:
This news comes in the wake of Pfizer and Moderna developing "safe, effective" vaccines. Moderna's vaccine will be suitable for Indian conditions.
