The central government today approved the draft law that makes the practice of instant triple talaq illegal. Part from banning the practice, the draft law seeks to punish the husband with a jail term of three years.
A government functionary said to the news agencies that the draft Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill was considered by the Union cabinet was approved by the same.
It may be recalled here that the draft was prepared by an inter-ministerial group headed by home minister Rajnath Singh. External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, finance minister Arun Jaitley, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and his junior in the ministry P.P. Chaudhary are other members of the group.
It is worth mentioning that the proposed law would only be applicable on instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat, and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking a “subsistence allowance” for her and minor children, the government functionary said.
