Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday said that the government would be fixing the minimum and maximum airfares for a period of three months. As is known, domestic flights will operate from May 25.
We have set a minimum and a maximum fare. In the case of Delhi to Mumbai travel, the minimum fare would be Rs 3,500 for a journey between 90-120 minutes, and the maximum fare would be Rs 10,000. This is operative for 3 months - till one minute to midnight on 24th August, the Minister today said.
There are more specifications. About 40% of seats have to be sold at a fare less than the midpoint of the band. For example, mid-point of Rs 3,500 and Rs 10,000 is Rs 6,700. So, 40% of the seats have to be sold at a price less than Rs 6,700. This is how we are ensuring that fares don't go out of control, the Ministry said.
For operations from Metro to Non-Metro cities and vice-versa, where weekly departures are less than 100, airlines are free to operate any routes of 1/3rd capacity of the approved summer schedule, 2020. For all other cities, airlines are free to use 1/3rd capacity of the approved summer schedule, the Ministry further added.
