Google Podcast to be shut down globally
Send us your feedback to audioarticles@vaarta.com
Google Podcasts, the popular podcast streaming app with over 500 million Android downloads, is set to be discontinued in mid-June 2024. Users have been given a heads-up and are being encouraged to migrate their podcasts to YouTube Music or export their subscriptions as an OPML file.
Why the Closure?
Google cites increased investment in podcast features on YouTube Music as the primary reason for shutting down Google Podcasts. The company aims to enhance the platform for both listeners and podcast creators, offering unique YouTube-only features related to discovery, community, and audio/visual switching by 2024.
Migration Options:
YouTube Music:
This is Google's preferred method for transferring your podcasts. Follow these steps: 1. Open the Google Podcasts app. 2. Go to the "Home" tab. 3. Locate the shutdown notification and click "Export Subscriptions." 4. Choose "Export to YouTube Music." 5. Select your Gmail account. 6. Your subscriptions will be added to YouTube Music. * Note: This process may take some time and not all podcasts will be transferred. For unavailable content, you can manually add the RSS feed link.
PML File:
You can download an OPML file containing your podcast subscriptions and upload it to another podcast app. Popular alternatives for Android include Podcast Addict, Podcast Player, Castbox, Podbean, and Spotify.
Timeline:
April 2024:
Streaming podcasts within the Google Podcasts app will no longer be available. * **Mid-June 2024:** The Google Podcasts app will be completely shut down.
What Makes Google Podcasts Unique:
Google Podcasts garnered a loyal following for its clean design, simplicity, and ad-free experience. Users appreciated its seamless cross-device listening, allowing them to switch between smartphone, browser, and smart speakers.
Google's History of Sunsetting Services:
While the closure of Google Podcasts may be a disappointment for some, it follows a trend of the company shutting down services deemed unsuccessful. Other notable examples include Stadia, Hangouts, and Inbox.
The Future of Podcasts:
While Google is consolidating its podcast efforts on YouTube Music, the popularity of podcasts continues to grow. With a wide range of alternative apps available, listeners will likely find new ways to enjoy their favorite shows.
