If you haven’t caught on to it yet, hit Google as soon as possible and see the doodle. You will be able to observe a group of women wioth linked hands surrounding a tree amidst a artsy canopy of the night sky. Well, this is Google’s way of remembering the Chipko Movement.

What was Chipko movement? The goal of Chipko Movement which was in 1973, Uttar Pradesh was to bring was to avert deforestation by bringing an awareness about it. This happened when deforestation was being done in a large scale owig to the need to build dams, industries and roads. The movement was initiated by noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahugana.

It is also worth noting here that women participants were crucial in spearheading the movement. Today marks the 45th anniversary of the Chipko Movement. No doubt this is a worthy reminder to those brave participants and high time that we give more thought to planting more trees for a greener tomorrow.
