Good films, poor collections

A curious trend is seen in todayÂs film industry. Forget the fate of films that generate a negative talk, even films that have a positive talk going with them have been found failing in translating the buzz into collections. A case in point, to be sure, are films like Pilla Jamindaru, It's My Love Story, Veedu Theda and Solo. You may be surprised to know that Sri Rama Rajyam is yet another film which too is in this category.
While Madhura SridharÂs IMLS has seen its collections sliding down even though the film has just completed 25 days, the fate of Nikhil-starrer Veedu Theda, is no different. Ditto Solo. Nara Rohit and his makers may have expected to attract family audience. Unfortunately, the sensible film has only got critical acclaim but not business.
That BapuÂs magnum opus Sri Rama Rajyam, too, is in dire straits is even more unfortunate. The film was universally hailed as a visual treat, et al, but two weeks after its release, the film has clocked only Rs. 2 crore in the Nizam area. (In contrast, a mediocre film like Bejawada mopped up Rs. 1.5 crore on its first day of release in the same area. Talk of debased tastes?). In fact, the film might fail to break-even. Alas!
The silver lining, of course, is Pilla Jamindaru, which is doing brisk business even though it is nearing 50 days.
With producers releasing their films in more number of theaters dreading the scourge of piracy, even super hit films are failing to pass the marathon 100-day mark. Dookudu, for example, will celebrate its 75-day run in not more than one-tenth the number in which it passed the 50-day run.
