Golimaar Review

Action as his forte, director Puri Jagannadh has brought out another action entertainer in the form of `Golimaar' with tall hunk Gopichand. The title of the movie says it all, shoot the bullet and that's what Puri has shown on celluloid. As told before, the story of `Golimaar' is inspired by the real life experiences of encounter specialist Daya Nayak. Inspired ok but the racing screenplay of the movie is something that looks highly creative and straight from Puri Jagannadh's talent bank.

The crux of the movie

Gopichand is Ganga Ram. The movie starts with an introduction of a kid who is highly ambitious of joining the police force. He grows up with the ambition and lives up to it. He is selected and appointed as a Sub Inspector. He is an `honest' police officer who loves his job. Subsequently introduced through the screenplay are two villains. Kelly Dorjee as Khaleel, a dreaded don who operates from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and another don Talwar who operates in Hyderbad are shown in their respective dens. They extort money and kill the rich men in the city.

Talking about a solution to see the end of these dons is DIG of police, Bharath Nanda (Nasser). He asks for an idea from the officers in the meeting and prompt comes the reply from Gopichand that the police should not succumb to the pressures of the dons. Following a few events, Nasser suggests Gopichand to set up a separate office to start killing the members of the gangs of the dons. Gopichand is now Ganga Ram, the encounter specialist. The cop is merciless and he is on a killing spree to free the state from the mafia menace.

In between all this, the encounter specialist encounters heroine Pavithra (Priya Mani) an event organizer. Acting as her mother is Roja, who has got a meaty role. The hero and heroine fall in love but Roja is against it as she has a bad past. Things for the hero are not velvety from his personal front but he eventually gets her after a hard struggle.

All is not smooth from the professional end either till Kelly Dorjee reveals his plans. Ganga Ram, the cop is caught for serious and critical reasons that he is falsely blamed for. The circumstances lead him to resign his job. Ganga Ram turns himself in to a gangster named Gangu Bhai. As a gangster he tries to get rid of the hazards the dons pose to Hyderbad. How Gopichand tries to get out of the web, annihilates the dons, destroys their network and does he get his job back forms the rest of the movie!

The Impressive Elements

`Golimaar' scores high marks in almost all departments. Puri Jagannadh's racy screenplay in the first half is nothing but super. The violence in the movie is not that gory. The action scenes, bullet exchanges, thrilling chases, Puri has managed to capture all the excitement and encounters on camera with the help of cinematographer Shyam Naidu.

Similarly another impressive element in the movie is Chakri's music and rerecording. The racy music complimenting the racy screenplay sustains the interest of the audience. Being an action movie, the audience will not be disappointed with the action involved. Dialogues are commanding and Gopichand's dialogue delivery receives praise. `Dhamki Dena Padtha Hai', he says it with a steady and firm voice to threaten the villains.

Bhaskar Bhatla's lyrics for the movie are impressive, importantly for the `Salam Police' song which is a paean to the police force. `Magalu' and `Gundello' songs are also impressive.

Characterisation

Puri Jagannadh has sketched his characters very carefully. Gopichand's character as Ganga Ram and later his evolved avatar as Gangu Bhai are powerfully portrayed. As the encounter specialist, he is shown as fierce, brave and a cop with a never-say-die attitude. As Gangu Bhai, he is shown as a revengeful gangster who has great understanding for his gang members who join him after he resigns from the police force. Priya Mani's lovable character is good enough but the highlight of the movie as far as characters are concerned is the courageous mother of Priya Mani, Roja as Arundathi, has excelled in her role. Her expressions, dialogue delivery and screen space are immaculate. The characters of the villains and their partners are etched well too. Comedian Ali plays a cameo and does his job effortlessly.

The Unimpressive Elements

The first half of the movie was so racy that the audience didn't find many distractions. It was a perfect package for the action movie buff. The first half of Golimaar needed the audience to take a deep breath once it got over. The second half doesn't have the same impact on the audience though. Songs at awry places and imprecise editing in the second half spoil the feel of the first half of the movie. However, the director has managed to grab the attention of the audience back in the climax.

Puri Jagannadh's movies always have a particular style of story narration and this movie is no lesser. He manages to entertain the audience effectively. Gopichand gratifies as a cop. `Golimaar' is a movie for avid action movie viewers. Not having enough doses of action? `Golimaar' is the prescription!
