Global music sensation Shakira landed in trouble after Spanish prosecutors on Friday asked for a prison sentence of over eight years and a fine of more than €24 million (Rs 1,94,37,68,415) for the Colombian pop star, who has been accused of committing six cases of tax fraud.
The prosecutors from Barcelona have accused Shakira of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of €14.5 million of income earned between 2012 and 2014. The singer rejected a plea deal on Wednesday and informed via a statement through her lawyers that she was absolutely certain of her innocence and has decided to let the case go to court. She is apparently confident that she will be proven innocent. Her lawyers have claimed that an agreement remains possible until the start of any trial.
Shakira further mentioned that the prosecutors were insisting on claiming money earned during her international tours and the show ‘The Voice,’ on which she was a judge in the United States, when she was not yet a resident in Spain. Neither has a trial date been set nor has a formal referral to court been announced yet.
