Girish Karnad (81), the prominent and critically-acclaimed playwright, who also had a stint with acting, is no more. He passed away early on Monday after a prolonged illness caused by multiple organ failure.
A recipient of Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Jnanpith Award, Karnad was known for original writing style. 'Tughlaq' and 'Hayavadana' are two of his most popular works.
Condolences are pouring in from the literary world. "Saddened to hear of the passing of Girish Karnad - a great writer and a very important public voice. Thoughts are with @rkarnad and his family," said Amitav Ghosh.
A well-known name in the south Indian film industry, Karnad was a rationalist. His wish was that there should be no religious last rites for his mortal remains. As such, his body will be handed over to an electric crematorium.
