GHMC math: TRS needs to win just 67, while BJP needs to win 95

Ahead of the GHMC elections, it becomes important to understand how many seats a party needs to win in order to secure the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The math is not straightforward, given that ex-officio members of the GHMC Council have voting rights. The Council, by virtue of the TRS' dominance in the Assembly, Lok Sabha, Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha elections in the past, is tilted towards the TRS.

In all, 150 seats are going for polls on December 1. The TRS needs to win just 67 of these to get Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

BJP, however, needs to win 95 seats. The Congress party needs three seats more than the saffron party.

About the Ex-officio numbers in the GHMC Council:

There are 52 members in total. But 7 members are not eligible to vote, as they have exhausted their option in the past.

This leaves the Council with 45 members.

TRS dominates it with an overwhelming majority of 31 votes.

MIM has got 10.

BJP has got 3.

Congress has got 1.

Total:

Elected (150) plus Ex-officio (45) = 195 seats

Simple majority = 98 seats
