Following the German war, the worst serial killing has been recorded in the country in a horrifying series of incidents. German nurse Niels Hoegel was found guilty of having killed 85 of the patients by giving them lethal injections. Judge Sebastian Buehrmann told him: “Your crimes are impossible to grasp. The human mind struggles to take in the sheer scale of these crimes." The 42-year-old had been charged with committing 100 murders between the years of 2000 and 2005. He had admitted to 43 of them and denied the rest. Hoegel was sentenced to 7 years in prison for attempted murder in 2008 after he was found to have injected a patient with an unprescribed medicine.
In 2014-2015, family members of the victims pushed for a second trial. The third trial was initiated in October 2018. As on 6th June 2019, the nurse was sentenced to life imprisonment for “severe gravity of guilt”. It is possible that he has up to 300 victims over the past 15 years. On the last day of hearings, Hoegel said: “I would like to sincerely apologise for everything I did to you over the course of years.” It is said that he acted out of boredom and because he wanted to show off his skills of reviving patients.
