Director Gautham Vasudev Menon is one of the top directors of Tamil cinema, known for his love stories and police action movies, such as Minnale, Kaala Kaaka, Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu, Varanam Aayiram etc and is next directing Joshua and Dhruva Natchathiram.

The director, in an interview to Indiaglitz had revealed how he had fulfilled his father's wish and made a memory for him before his death. Gautham Vasudev Menon's father was a fan of Kamal Haasan and his movies, and hence Gautham Vasudev Menon directed some scenes of Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu in his own home.

Besides, to create a memory for his father, he made his father appear in a shot in Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu's Karka Karka song, when Kamal Haasan enters a pub for a shootout. It must be noted that, Vettaiyadu vilaiyadu released in 2006, and Gautham Vasudev Menon's father passed away the next year, and his character was an inspiration for the father character in Vaaranam aayiram.
