Suryapet, Telangana: In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old boy who was declared brain dead after being in a coma for more than a week came alive during his own funeral. Gandham Kiran, a college student, had been taken to the hospital on 26th June due to high fever and vomiting. It was said that had severe hepatitis. His mother Saidamma said: “Kiran’s condition turned critical on June 28 and following the doctors’ advice, we shifted him to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad. There, he slipped into a coma and on July 3, the doctors told us that my son is brain-dead and there were no chances of his survival.”

Though doctors suggested removing the life support, Saidamma refused. She said: “I wanted my son to breathe his last at our place in the village. So, we brought him home along with the life-support system late in the evening.” As she returned home, preparations for the funeral were going on and the firewood was being arranged.

Just then the mother noticed tears flowing from her son’s eyes as she mourned his death. She said: “I was shocked and alerted my relatives, who immediately called a local medical practitioner. He told us that my son’s pulse was still beating and appreciated us for not removing the ventilator.” Kiran was taken to Suryapet hospital again. Saidamma said: “Within three days, Kiran came to senses and started talking to us, albeit in a low tone. He was discharged on Sunday and we are continuing the treatment as per the doctors’ advice.” The fact that the mother thought of continuing life support and the boy’s response at that crucial moment, both tell us that some things are beyond science.
