There has long been confusion as to which date should be considered as the Tamil New Year, the existing April 14 (Chithirai 1) or January 14 (Thai 1). Former Chief Minister Kalaigniar Karunanidhi during his last tenure passed an order that Pongal should be followed as the beginning of the year by the Tamil people. However when the late Jayalalitha came to power she once again reverted back to the previous custom.

G.V. Prakash Kumar who is a keen activist for the Tamil language and culture has posted proof of an archeological discovery at Keezhakarai in Ramanathapuram district which shows that ancient Tamil's indeed considered Pongal as the beginning of a New Year.
