Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there has been a dip in the economy globally, and this situation has impacted India as well. With the prices of oil coming down, it was expected that the Indian government will allow consumers to enjoy the benefit of the situation by lowering the prices of fuels.
However, the central government has hiked the excise duty and cess on petrol as well as diesel by Rs 3, and it has been said that this will enable earnings of 2000 crores in 15 days and an estimated total of close to 40000 crores in the financial year.
Coming down against this excise duty hike on fuels, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has tweeted that he had met the Prime Minister and requested him to pass the oil price reduction benefits to consumers but did the opposite. He tweeted " Just 3 days ago I had requested @PMOIndia to pass on the benefit of the global oil price crash to Indian consumers, by slashing the prices of petrol & diesel in India. Instead of heeding this advice, our genius has gone and hiked #exciseduty on fuel".
