The second Friday of July has no big surprises on cards as there are only two big films releasing on the day. Both the big films are merited on their own rights. One is bigger in terms of the budget and casting while the other is big enough by the sheer name of the production house. Apart from two biggies there are a few dubbed movies are also occupying the theatres.
AGS Entertainment Pvt Ltd Madrasapattinam is the most hyped film of the week. The movie which has a delayed release has also pushed some movies to next month. It stars Arya as a dhobhi cum wrestler who falls in love with a British girl Amy Jackson who is a daughter of a governor general. She is educated he is illiterate. She knows only English and he doesn't know any English. They both cannot communicate their love but still love blooms. Their fight for their love and survival is told in the background of pre-independence India. The details of the period film is said to be authentic. Director Vijay who was an assistant to Priyadarshan gets his first chance of doing a mammoth film like his mentor. The period film that was completed in record eight months is going to be a visual treat. The language of the film is 70 per cent Tamil and 30 per cent English. For vieres who dont know English there are subtitles.
The other big one is from the stable of producer-director Shankar. While the director Shankar is always embarks on opulat journeys like Sivaji and Endhiran the producer Shankar is hell bent for quality films like Kadhal and Veyil. But his recent productions have not fared well at the box office and Shankar hopes Ananthapurathu Veedu will put hi S Pictures back in the reckoning.
Ananthapurathu Veedu is directed by Naga who is popular for his television drams with super natural themes like Marmadesam. Even this film is super natural horror film but is on relationships and family bonding. Naga says the super natural beings in the films are so good that the audience would want to have similar creatures in their homes when they leave the theatres. That is the impact expected of Ananthapurathu Veedu. The film stars Nandaa, Chaya Singh and Master Aryan in major characters.
Then there are two small films En Ullam Unnai Theduthe and Se Koodalur which at some point said a July 9 release but may not make it. Also in question is one film titled Kadarkarai.
As usual there are a few dubbed films that will fight for its space this week. Manoj Night Shyamalans adventure fantasy film The Last Airbender released in international markets on July 1 will see its Indian release on July 9.The live-action film adaptation of the animated television serial Avatar: The Last Airbender will also speak in Tamil this Friday. While the 3D Tamil version is called Vayu Avatar the normal version is being called Ulaga Nayagan.
Don is a high profile star cast 2007 Telugu film releasing in Tamil with the same name. Though a three year old film is written and directed by Raghava Larencce. Lawrence has also made his debut as a music director in this. The timing of the Tamil dubbing is can be linked to capitalize on the popularity of Anushka after Singam and Raghava Larencce after IKMS. The story of Don is a routine underworld gang lord with a golden heart. Stars of the film are Nagarjuna, Anushka, Raghava Lawrence, Nikita, Sampath Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nassar and Kelly Dorjee.
ATM Thirudan betting on the popularity Bhavna, Prithviraj and Narain is the dubbed version of Malayalam film Robinhood. Directed by Joshi the film has an interesting plot. Prithviraj is a tech whizkid who smartly robs bank ATMs. Narain is a private investigating officer hired by the bank. Bhavana is a bank employee who helps Narain. Jayasurya, Biju Menon and Samvritha are also there.
Another dubbed movie Minor also talked of a July 9 release. But its doubtful. Minor is dubbed from Telugu Maa Ayana Chanti Pilladu which is a remake Tamil film 'En Purushan Kuzhanthai Mathiri'. The dubbing is banking on Sangeetha and Meera Jasmine. Its debatable whether a movie of this kind is doing anything good to the industry or its people.
