The World Cup Cricket begins on February 18 will go on till April 2. So the February is crucial and if initial reports are to be believed there is going to be a mad rush of releases in February. Till now around 15 films have announced their releases this month. Not many biggies would be venturing to release important films during the season. However there may be exceptions due to last minutes developments we warned.

For this week Friday there are two straight Tamil films and two dubbed ones. ‘Thoonga Nagaram’ and ‘Yudham Sei’ are two films that are taking many theatres of Pongal releases giving out a message. ‘Minsara Kathali’ and ‘Paayum Kaththikal’ are from the dubbing stable.

‘Thoonga Nagaram’ is the first direct production of Cloud Nine Movies and that makes a good beginning. Gaurav, a former associate of KS Ravikumar has directed it apart from being one of the heroes.

The film is about four youths who come together in Madurai and turn local gangsters. When their friendship is tested by certain happenings it comes to a breaking point. 'Pasanga' Vimal, 'Naadodigal' Bharani, 'Renigunta'Nishanth and the film’s director Gaurav are the four heroes. Anjali plays the role of a local cable TV anchor and she pairs with Vimal..

Music of Sundar C Babu is said to be one of the highlights of the film. The re-recording of the film was done in Prauge with the country's symphony orchestra. Though it is a Madurai gangster film, the director says there is no blood. That’s interesting.

‘Yudham Sei' is a Mysskin film that stars director Cheran in the lead role of a CBI officer along with debutant Dipa Shah. The story is about the search for a serial killer. Mysskin says this genre is new to Tamil cinema and Cheran has done an excellent job. Y Gee Mahendran is playing a role which he has never done before and it would shock and surprise the audience simultaneously.

‘Yudham Sei' is worth watching for the deadly coming together of Mysskin and Cheran.

Dubbed film ‘Minsara Kathali’ is promoted as sleaze. It is dubbed from the Hindi film ‘Haseena - Smart, Sexy, Dangerous’. The only attraction the producer depends on is the presence of Isha Koppikar. The movie also has Preeti Jhangiani of ‘Jodi’ fame. A passing off film.

‘Paayum Kaththikal’ is dubbed from the Hong Kong costume martial arts drama ‘14 Blades’. It is an action thriller set during the Ming Dynasty and centered on a General who heads an elite force. He is entrusted with guarding the Emperor's Seal, sought after by a vengeful Prince who lost his legs in a failed coup.

This 20 million dollars film is already nominated for Best Action Choreography and Best Sound Design at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards.

The big question of screens availability is raging. With just two films releasing this weekend there are more questions arising as to what happened to the theatres. A resolution passed in the meeting of Tamil Film Producers Council last month said, the industry wants theatres in TN to screen only Tamil films for 36 weeks in a year compulsorily. It may be recalled that during the regime of Chief Minister MGR in the eighties there was a decree passed to this effect. But nobody appreciated his foresight then. The after effects are so harsh that it’s time to take remedial measures.
