As the year is getting to its close, there is a scramble for theatres. It is said that more than 60 films that were censored this year are waiting for release. Then again the most modern problem in the industry of not having enough theaters or theaters not being relieved adds to the woes. There have been quite a number of films that have either postponed or deferred or worse shelved the release because of this problem. This week too there is a few.

But otherwise for this Friday, three straight Tamil films - Raththa Charithiram, Tha and Chikku Bhukku – and two dubbed ones – Ambedkar and The Chronicle of Narnia- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as Narnia Oru Vinodha Payanam are seeing the light of the day. Interestingly all the three straight films are deferred releases.

‘Raththa Charithiram’ is a multi lingual film starring Suriya, Vivek Oberoi, Priyamani and others directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film was shot in two parts simultaneously in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil. The first one wasn’t released in Tamil as Suriya appears largely in the second part only.

The first part is a bio-pic on Paritala Ravi from Anantapur, who takes up violence at a young age to become a most dreaded don. He then becomes a minister and continues his violence with immunity. In the second part the rise and rise of the influence and power of Prathap Ravi meets with the biggest obstacle in Suriya Narayana Reddy played by Suriya. Pratap’s nemesis happens to be Suriya.

‘Raththa Charithiram’ is said to be the bloodiest film ever in recent memory. Since only the second part is releasing in Tamil, RGV has added 20 minutes from the film’s first part (‘Raktha Charithra’) to introduce the plot. ‘Rattha Charithram’ is produced by Madhu Mantena and Sheetal Vinod Talwar of Cinergy Productions and now acquired by Dayanidhi Azhagiri of Cloud Nine Productions.

Shreya Films ‘Tha’ is a small film with all new comers that hopes to make it with its solid content. It is Produced Rajesh Uthaman and directed by debutant director RK Surya Prabhakar who apprenticed under Samuthirakani. The lead pair Sri Hari and Nisha from Mumbai is also debutants. The film has got a good pre release talk thanks to the wonderful songs by the first time music director Sri Vijay from Sri Lanka

‘Tha’ is a love story set in the dry lands of Coimbatore. The one liner about the film is this. “The one who bashes up ten is not a man. But the one who is liked by a woman is the complete man.” The film claims to have shown the dry lands of Coimbatore a city synonymous with only lush greenery in cinema.

'Chikku Bhukku', starring Arya and Shriya Saran in lead roles, is a romantic travelogue, which starts in London and ends in Karaikudi. The film is produced by Media One Global Entertainment Limited and directed by Manikandan, a former associate of late Jeeva.

The diversity between spectacular locations in London, rain forests near exotic western ghats in Karnataka and monumental Karaikudi would give a new look and grandeur to ‘Chikku Bhukku’. Music of the film is Colonial Cousins Hari and Leslie,

On dubbing front the much delayed ‘Babasaheb Ambedkar’ is releasing in Tamil. This film was censored in 1998 as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in English but commercially released only in 2000. The film is about the life of Dr. B R. Ambedkar who was the Architect of The Indian Constitution and a Great Social Reformist. Mammootty played the title role and won the National Film Award for Best Actor.

The only Hollywood dubbed film for this week is The Chronicle of Narnia- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as Narnia - Oru Vinodha Payanam in 3D. It is the third in the Narnia series and releasing a week before its US release.

Two small films ‘Sanikizhamai Sayangalam 5’ Mani and ‘Agarathi’ which announced their release on December 3 have bowed out.
