French Anesthesiologist Frederic Pechier has been arrested due to the suspicion that he has poisoned more than 50 patients and then saved them at the last minute in order to impress his colleagues. He has been taken into custody owing to the 42 serious adverse events including 20 deaths in his watch over the years.
He was charged in seven other cases previously. By tampering with the anesthesia pouch he apparently caused cardiac arrests, giving him a chance to then save the patients. He was even considered a brilliant anaesthesiologist by his peers due to his actions. Peicher was accused of poisoning 7 individuals between the years of 2008 and 2017. 2 victims had extremely high potassium levels in their bloodstream, up to 5 times the fatal dose. Now 50 more possible cases have been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
Pechier has been on judicial supervision since 2017 and was also banned from practicing medicine. The doctor denies the charges and reports that he is innocent. His defense team states that the rise in potasium level in a dead body can occur naturally. Only time will tell if this will prove to be a case of one of the biggest serial killers in France.
