Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that public transport for women will be free of cost in Delhi. This will amount to about Rs. 700 crores per year for the government. The blueprint will be presented to the cabinet in a week and is expected to be launched in three months. Kejriwal said: “Right now our concern is the safety of women. There are questions regarding the metro, but we will let you know how the proposal evolves at every step.” It was also said that those who can afford the costs can pay for travel if they would like to.
Twitter users have been weighing in on the matter. While some of them are supporting the move, others are questioning how it will contribute to the safety of women. Questions are also being raised as to whether the policy is discriminatory and whether it will be feasible.
