Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been confirmed dead after he was shot at a campaign event in the western region of Nara on Friday, as per reports by public broadcaster NHK and Jiji news agency.
The hospital authorities at the Turner’s Medical University, where the former PM was treated, mentioned that they treated him for over 4.5 hours but were unable to save him. “According to a senior LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) official, former prime minister Abe died at a hospital in Kashihara city, Nara region, where he was receiving medical treatment. He was 67,” NHK said.
Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he is ‘lost for words’ after the tragic incident. Meanwhile, PM Narenda Modi condoled the death of Shinzo Abe and announced that a day of national mourning shall be observed on July 9, 2022. “I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place,” the PM posted.
