Finding herself elsewhere
- IndiaGlitz, [Wednesday,February 23 2005]
It was India Glitz which first wrote about Laya's foray in Malayalam.
The young and comely actress who is finding the going tough in Andhra what with the offers being far and few between is hopeful that her new experiments will bear fruit.
It is one of the ironies of the time that an actress like Laya, who is the only real Telugu-speaking actress around, should get stuck in a blind alley of sorts here.
The irony looks accentuated when you realize that Laya is not only good looking but is also capable of acting out any kind of role.
As one observant trenchantly put it, "perhaps, Laya is paying a price for speaking in Telugu". The biting sarcasm in those words speaks a lot about the fetish of Telugu producers for bringing Bollywood babes who cannot lisp a single word in sundara Telugu.
But it is they who walk away with all the roles.
Laya, for her part, is not bitter. Of course it rankles that she is not able to find a niche in her own language. But the Nandi-award winning actress says she will more laurels elsewhere too.
Her role in the Malayalam film she is doing now is said to be very good. It might fetch her some awards is the general talk in the industry.
Laya, in Sanskrit means, rhythm. So Laya is finding herself in Malluwood.
Pity it could not be here.
