In a tragic news, the son of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro ended his own life by suicide. Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart was 68 years old and said to have been experiencing depression for the past several months according to a Cuban government website.

Fondly referred to as the ‘Fidelito’ or Little Fidel owing to the striking resemblances to his father – think ‘tall’ and ‘beard’-  was also a nuclear physicist having graduated from Russia and have also worked as a scientific counsellor to his uncle President Raul Castro.

It is also noteworthy that he was the head of Cuba’s national nuclear program for a period of twelve years from 1980 to 1992.  Fidelito is the eldest son of Fidel Castro and born to his first wife Mirta Diaz-Balart. It should be noted that his father Fidel Castro died in November 2016 at the age of 90.
