The ugly head of casteism once again was at the fore in Telangana where the father and brother of a 22-year old newly-married girl were arrested yesterday at Mancherial District in Telangana for killing her to save the ‘family’s honour’.
22-year old Anuradha, who hails from the District, had earlier released a private video in which she had deposed that she had married Laxman (from another caste) on her own and added that her parents and family would be responsible if anything (bad) happened to her or her husband. This video has now gone viral on social media.
Fearing worst, Anuradha had also pleaded with the police to take cognizance of the video in case things went wrong. Along with Anuradha’s brother and father, four others were also arrested after she was found dead on Sunday (23rd December) under very mysterious circumstances. She was apparently beaten up hard before getting strangulated to death reportedly by her father and brother, police say.
On interrogation, the family members confessed to killing her, and burning her body at Mallapur Village (Nirmal District) after which they discarded the remains in a canal so as not to arouse any suspicion. Laxman had earlier complained to the police that the family had forcibly taken away his wife on Saturday night.
