Hear it for Akshay's 'Qatra Qatra'
Wednesday, December 7, 2005 • Hindi Comments

Can you imagine a music album for a hardcore commercial movie that has 9 tracks lasting for just 29 minutes? Well, difficult to believe but that's the truth with Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Family Ties Of Blood' that has music by Ram Sampat [who also composed for the director's last flick 'Khakee'] and lyrics by Sameer. A short album, it primarily comprises of some foot tapping dance numbers and situational tracks that have an average duration of just around 3 minutes each!

1) Qatra Qatra (Original and remix) [Arnab Chakraborty, Soumya Raoh]

Arnab Chakravorty, who sang a melodious 'Vaada Raha' in 'Khakee', changes track completely for 'Qatra Qatra' where he gets into a peppy mood. The song reminds of vintage Akshay Kumar tracks from his 'Khiladi' series when numerous such songs were composed with a large number of extras dancing to the steps of Chinni Prakash and company. 'Qatra Qatra' belongs to a similar league with a difference being that it is much more contemporary, stylish and IN. As expected, a remix for the number appears as well, though chances are remote that for a movie like 'Family' that belongs to action'n'drama genre, there would be a specially created music video for it.

2) Pyaar Bina [Suhail Kaul, Ernie]

Ram Sampat showed sparks of coming up with good foot tapping numbers in his very first movie 'Khakee' when he composed 'Aisa Jadoo' that was picturised on Lara Dutta. He shows that it was not a mere flash in the pan with 'Pyaar Bina Zindagi' that is an item number picturised on debutant Aryaman. The song continues to be 'masti' and 'dhoom' due to its western musical arrangement and though lyrics are quite ordinary and routine, it is the beats that give this flashy number an instant coffee effect. Hear it, enjoy it and then forget about it when a few days pass by! The track is primarily sung by new entrant Suhail Kaul who does a good job in his initial outing. Ernie provides fine support.

3) Jeene Do [Suhail Kaul]

After rocking the show in 'Pyaar Bina', Suhail Khan turns groovy in 'Jeene Do' that is about liberation of youth. A mini track like most of the other tracks in the album, it too is composed in western style and is decent enough to come as a fine inclusion. A situational number with English words incorporated in the lyrics to make it look like a song belonging to 'today', it is medium paced and has a hip-hop feel to it.

4) Lori [Sona Mohaptra]

After all the dance and party, its time to relax with Sona Mohaptra's 'Lori', which is what else, but a lullaby. Just like countless other lullabies that you must have heard in your lifetime, this too is easy on ears and makes for a pleasant hearing. A situational track.

5) Janam Janam [Madhushree, Soumya Raoh, Arnab Chakraborty, Shailendra, Suhail Kaul]

Arnab Chakravorty, Sowmya Raoh and Suhail Khan, who had appeared in the numbers prior to 'Janam Janam', come together along with Madhushree and Shailendra for a number where all the members of a family render a song about happiness and togetherness. A sure shot situational track that doesn't have much in it that could be taken home by you, it is passable number composed in true Indian style of music.

6) Family Theme [Prakash]

The most haunting piece of the album that is going to make a strong impression as a part of the background score of the movie, 'Family Theme', has its own place in the film world just like 'Godfather theme'. It would be unfair to compare the two but the dedication with which the short theme track has been composed and incorporated as a part of the movie's promo; it is impressive enough to get the movie noticed. You would be able to relate to this better if you have already witnessed this piece as a part of Family's theatrical trailer!
