After seeing the story of a 2-year-old boy, Kaleb, on Facebook, a complete stranger to the family, Susie LeRoy graciously stepped in to save the boy’s life. LeRoy who is a 35-year-old mother of three children read about the boy’s condition of prune belly syndrome on the FB page “A Miracle for Kaleb." Speaking about her act, she said: “It was an opportunity for me to help out another mom and act out my faith. Connecting with Mandy, who has kids of a similar age, this could’ve easily been my kids.”
Kaleb’s parents could not donate the kidney themselves due to incompatibility issues. Prune Belly Syndrome, a rare disease which is characterized by lack of abdominal muscles, causes the abdominal area to appear wrinkled and can lead to severe issues in the kidney, bladder and even the heart.
The boy’s mother Mandy Perry was relieved, touched and overjoyed when her son got a donor. She said: “There are no words to show how much this means to us. Her act of love and selflessness — to be humble and surrendering and trusting this is the right thing to do.” She added: “She provided Kaleb with a new life. It’s amazing to think someone who was a stranger to us a few weeks ago and would do that.” The transplant took place at the perfect time as the little boy’s health was starting to decline. Such incidents restore our faith in humanity.
