Ezhamathe Varavu Review

We have heard somewhere in the promotions of 'Ezhamathe Varavu' that this was the same movie which the same makers has shot thirty years ago, with actors Sukumaran and Venu Nagavally in the lead. Then, they were not able to complete it due to financial problems. And now when the same scripts has been remade with little differences , the movie very well give that retro feel in its mood and narratives. The legendary team of writer M T Vasudevan Nair and director Hariharan , just manages to hold our interest at times mostly due to the inspiring performances by the lead actors, Indrajith, Vineeth and Bhavana.

Vineeth is Dr Prasad, an archaeologist who is at a site at Wayanad, to dig out remnants of a old city of interest. He is housed at the bunglow of  a rich plantation owner Gopi (Indrajith), who is a self proclaimed sharp shooter. Prasad finds to his astonishment that Gopi's wife Bhanu (Bhavana) was once his closest mate during college days and that their relationship is much strained due to reasons unknown. The movie takes a turn as a ferocious tiger starts to hunt tribal women. The myth circulated has it that this is the soul of Thondachan, who comes out of the forest every seven years to hunt down seven women before going back.

Gopi,doesn't believe in the myth but take it as a chance to prove himself. He moves to the estate bungalow and starts his moves to kill the dreaded tiger. Bhanu too moves on to the same place in a few days. With the tiger now aiming for it seventh prey before going back, more unlikely things are set to happen in the lives of the trio.

The performances are the highlight of the movie which undoubtedly is nowhere near the best of the legendary team of M T and Hariharan. Vineeth is convincing as Prasad, while  Indrajith steals the show with his  loud, boastful character.  Bhavana and the rest of the cast are ok in the roles.

The technical sides, the camera by S Kumar, editing and visual effects are good. Though this  `Ezhamathe Varavu may not exactly appeal to the sensibilities of the new generation audience, it  is still worth a watch.
