With heavy rain continuing to lash in Kerala, Indian Meteorological Department has warned a red and orange alert in several parts of the state.
As Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad is expected to witness an extreme weather condition, a red alert has been declared there. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been declared in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The ongoing spell will continue with heavy rains forecast till Sunday.
As another low-pressure area is expected to be formed in Sunday, it is expected to strengthen the going rain in Kerala. In the view of extreme rains, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) instructed district authorities to shift people residing in disaster-prone areas to safe rehabilitation centres adhering to COVID-19 protocols as a precautionary step.
Three people, including two children, have died so far in rain-related incidents in Kerala. The death toll since the onset of the four-month-long South West Monsoon that set in on June 1 has risen to 31, officials said.
