Ex-CBI chief Ashwani Kumar, who was also the Governor of Nagaland after his CBI stint, was on Wednesday found dead in his Shimla house. Reports say that he was found hanging. A team of forensic experts collected the evidence to investigate the matter further.

A note, suspected to have been written by Kumar, was recovered from his house.

The 1973 batch officer of the IPS headed the CBI from August 2008 to November 2010. His tenure as the chief of CBI was big, as the CBI arrested then Gujarat Minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case in 2010. This happened when P Chidambaram was India's Home Minister. Cut to 2019, Amit Shah became HM and PC went to jail in a disproportionate assets case.

Commenting on the suicide, journalist Aman Sharma wrote, "Ashwani Kumar was a surprise choice for CBI Director in 2008. He did not allow a charge-sheet to be filed against the servants in Arushi murder case and set up a new team which ultimately made an opposite case after his term was over."
