The Bharatiya Janata Party has got a master strategy with respect to the next General Elections. At a time when its governments in Madhya Pradesh and even Rajasthan are said to be facing anti-incumbency among certain sections of the population, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chanakyan chief of the party, Amit Shah, are mooting simultaneous polls in December 2018.
This means that, instead of the scheduled elections in April 2019, the Government will call for early polls so as to coincide with the slated Assembly elections in the States of MP, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, and Mizoram.
Some analysts have it that the move is aimed at capitalizing on Modi's undiminished popularity, thereby allowing Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Vasundhara Raje in the main to ride on a historic NaMo wave.
However, the present Lok Sabha will continue to function for its full 5-year term. "The statutory provision that polls can be held within six months of being due is being examined as it will not require complicated measures such an amendment to the Constitution," a national daily has noted.
