Meta and TikTok Face EU Deadline Over Israel-Hamas Response

Before October 25, the European Commission wants Facebook parent company Meta and Chinese-owned TikTok to open. The two will discuss their response to misinformation on digital and physical media during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The European Commission wants Meta's details under the Digital Services Act. They want Meta to explain how they accomplished their tasks, including risk evaluations and election protection. Preventing improper content and deception, especially in light of Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel, is the main goal.

TikTok was also recommended to clarify its risk assessments and mitigation procedures, particularly for illegal content, terrorist and violent materials, and hate speech. It follows similar requests to Elon Musk's X social media site, formerly Twitter.

Meta and TikTok have until October 25 to respond to the Israel-Hamas crisis. Meta must provide election integrity measures by November 8, while TikTok must report election integrity measures in addition to online child protection.

Digital Services Act sanctions would apply if such requests are not met. According to the EU, Meta, a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP), may have to pay 6% of its yearly sales in fines.

This is necessary since the EU is committed to regulating misleading and harmful content under DSA.
