A revenge story set in the backdrop of Tuticorin salt fields is `Esa'. The movie is about a youth Sudaleeswaran (Vignesh), who works in a salt field and is forced to take cudgels against his bosses for the alleged atrocity that they have committed in his life.
Directed by Bala Ganesha, the film is gory and violent all the way with Vignesh giving his heart out.
Vignesh, who is still searching for success, shoulders the major burden in the movie. He is right there romancing, running around with a motive to avenge the killers of his wife et al.
He is equally complimented well by Lakshana, who plays his wife. She resembles the girl next-door. Also the rest of the cast including M S Baskar, Singampuli, Subburaj and Tuticorin Rajendran render justice to their roles.
The movie begins with Sudaleeswaran (Vignesh), who runs around and kidnaps a couple of salt field owners in a remote village in Tuticorn. He takes them to his hut and murders them one after another. He spends all his time with his wife Selvi (Lakshana).
Soon it is revealed that Sudaleeswaran lives in the world of his own and that he is on a mission to kill those who were behind the death of his wife. He believes that his wife is still alive and keeps her body in his hut.
Eventually police manage to track down his acts and retrieve many bodies from his house including that of his wife. However Sudaleeswaran manage to flee only to bump off Thanga Malai Annachi (Tutiorin Rajendran), a symbol of evil in the village.
It is a racy script laced with quick narration by Bala Ganesa. However the eyesore is violent action sequences. The director could have downplayed them. Haran's music is passable while his background score is good.
B R Bala Ganesh has captured the salt fields in a new colour in his lens, while B S Vasu's editing maintains the momentum. All said, `Esa' by JK Creations is a movie that manages to sustain interest for it is old wine but rendered in a new bottle.
