The joint director general of the DGCA, Lalit Gupta, announced that airlines must carry equal number of Hindi and English newspapers, given that airlines carry limited or zero newspapers and magazines in Hindi.

Gupta added that the increased number of English papers on flights was a violation of the nation's language policy. Airlines are at present making efforts to reduce costs and save fuel by carrying less on-board. Air India has stopped serving non-veg meals to its economy class flyers to cut costs and was subjected to the wrath of passengers.
