Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami would be meeting his Karnataka counterpart Siddaramaiah very soon to impress upon the latter the need to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu to meet the needs of farmers of the Delta Districts.
A letter from the Govt. of Tamil Nadu seeking ‘appointment’ with Siddaramaiah for meeting Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami has been sent, sources at the Secretariat said in Chennai. Addressed to the Principal Secretary to the Karnataka Chief-Minister, the letter has also been followed up by phone-calls for fixing a suitable appointment.
Farmers in Delta Districts in the States are a worried lot as their crops face the danger of extinction for want of water. Mettur Dam doesn’t have enough water to cater to the irrigation needs of these farmers. It is in this context that the chief-minister is planning to meet his Karnataka counterpart in person to request for urgent release of Cauvery water to save food crops in thousands of hectares.
It may be recalled that Siddaramaiah had earlier turned down Edapadi’s written request for release of Cauvery water for the same purpose.
