As unemployment continues to pose a serious threat in the country, a number of engineering graduates, MBAs, and degree holders of arts, science, and commerce are among the 4607 applicants who have applied for the post of sweepers (10 vacancies) and sanitary workers (4 vacancies) in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat.

There are no prerequisites for the jobs as such, although the potential candidates are required to be able-bodied. The candidate needs to be at least 18 years of age, while the maximum age limit differs for different posts. An official said that the salary range of Rs. 15,700 to Rs. 50,000 could be one of the main reasons for the professional applications.

Government jobs have become more attractive after the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission were implemented, according to the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Association. The process of selection will apparently be completed only after the Lok Sabha elections.
