Kotha Poradu is all about Raju (Anvesh Michael), who has to go from village to city for the sake of earning money. He is a laid back character like his father and more unintentionally aggressive by nature. He likes to be a free bird and tries to do different businesses at his village, PK Palli. But he ends up with debts and suddenly, he father dies piling up on the already mount high debt. He is challenged by the person who lent him money and within the time given to him, he has to payback the money and become a hero.
The story doesn't seem very fresh but the execution is. It brings the rural life of a Telangana village to the forefront and how the people tend to be laid back in villages, as well. If doesn't make its hero an underdog or an overachiever. It keeps him simple and a man with no education or filter or purpose. Hence, even when he gets a purpose, he becomes more frustrated for missing his simple life than getting triggered to be passionate.
He gets desperate and resorts to violence even but ends up being a winner albeit the shortcomings. Well, such a twist to regular formula is unexpected in Telugu creative space and this comedy achieves it with ease. He doesn't present itself with any undertones or subtility. We get to experience everything on the face and are expected to take it on the face value too.
The comedy is so fresh that we don't mind regular go-to clichés are being used by the makers as well. But the problems with underdeveloped characters remain. Not every character is given full arc or developed beyond regular stories. Still, it keeps you engaged and entertained.
Music adds a flavour to the series. Sync sound and entirely new cast who blend in with the local mileu, gives the series a distinctive likeability. It is not on par with Panchayat kind of a series which also digs deep into rural lifestyle and social commentary in general, but it definitely set itself right path to achieve such finesse.
