Millions and millions of people across the world have heard of Elon Musk for the first time this week. He has bought Twitter by splurging $44 billion. But everyone has an opinion on what he could have done with his wealth instead of buying Twitter.
Critics are saying that Musk promised to donate $6 billion in 2021 to end world hunger. "Far from doing that, he has wasted one-fifth of his net worth on buying a social media platform," they are lamenting.
Snopes.com has stated that the UN never observed that six billion dollars are enough to end world hunger forever. It only said that six billion dollars will help end world hunger (probably for a few years only). The money will be adequate to prevent mass migration, and geopolitical instability, besides saving 4.2 crore people from falling into starvation (for a few years).
Musk asked for a detailed plan from the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) so that he can make the donation. However, the plan is described as too vague.
Even now, the offer from Musk is very much open. A view is that the richest man can still donate $6 billion in sleep.
