As per a study conducted by Centre for Media Studies, different political parties have spent Rs 60,000 Cr during the Model Code of Conduct period in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections this year.
The estimate says that Rs 700 was spent on each vote. On the other hand, each parliamentary constituency saw spending of up to Rs 100 Cr by parties and candidates.
Campaigning and publicity costs accounted for Rs 25,000 Cr or so, the study says. Direct appeal to voters might have costed Rs 15,000 Cr. Formal and miscellaneous expenditure is less than Rs 20,000 Cr.
In 2014, the CMS study says, the expenditure was Rs 30,000 Cr. So, it has doubled this time, which is exponential in nature.
