The Enforcement Directorate has filed a review petition with the Delhi High Court challenging the verdict of a special CBI Court in the multi-crore 2G scam which shook the conscience of the national almost a decade back.
Former Union Telecom Minister A. Raja and DMK’s high-profile Rajya Sabha M.P. Kanimozhi were among the many persons who were charge-sheeted by the CBI for irregularities committed to the tune of a whopping Rs.1.76 lakh crores while allotting frequencies to telecom operators during Raja’s tenure as Minister when the Congress-led UPA was in power from 2004-14. DMK was part of the coalition Government.
Trial in the case had been going on for more than six years before the much-awaited verdict by a special CBI Court headed by Justice O.P. Saini was delivered on 21st December last year. Surprisingly enough, all the 14 accused including Raja and Kanimozhi had been acquitted as the Judge was of the opinion that the CBI couldn’t substantiate its allegations against the accused by producing solid evidences.
The Judge had also recorded in his verdict, albeit in a casual manner, that he had been waiting for six months for the CBI to produce some evidence and delayed the verdict for want of the same. ED preferred an appeal yesterday with the Delhi High Court challenging the special CBI Court’s verdict acquitting Raja, Kanimozhi and others. It is reported that the CBI might also file a review petition very soon.
