Sources at the Election Commission of India’s ‘Nirvachan Sadan’ headquarters in New Delhi expressed their displeasure and shock at the decision of major political parties including the Congress and the BJP, to boycott the upcoming Nagaland Assembly polls.

11 parties including some regional parties besides the Congress and the BJP have announced that they won’t context next month’s Assembly polls in the State unless a lasting solution is found to the insurgency issue which has been plaguing the North-Eastern State for several decades now.

The BJP, which rules at the Centre, is sharing power with the Nagaland People’s Front in the State. While the BJP-NPP alliance wants to extend its regime by yet another term, the Congress is making strategies to ally with other regional and smaller parties to topple the ruling front.

A joint meeting of the Naga Tribals with the Congress and the BJP representatives, held last night, took the extreme step of boycotting the Assembly polls scheduled to be held on 27th February. The parties have appealed to the Election Commission and to the Centre to postpone the Assembly polls till such time a lasting solution to the ethnic issues are arrived at.
