A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the main Indonesian island of Java, leaving at least 50 people dead and over 700 injured, say local officials. The earthquake which happened on Monday in the afternoon also damaged buildings and triggered landslides on Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday, officials said.
Reportedly, the 5.6 magnitude quake struck the densely popular Cianjur town in West Java, at a shallow depth of 10km (6 miles), according to US Geological Survey data. The tremor which was felt in the capital Jakarta about 100km away, left the people in panic and they ran out of the buildings. Reportedly, the death toll is likely to rise and rescuers have been trying to evacuate survivors trapped under the rubble as aftershocks hit. Pictures and videos of roofs collapsed and debris lining the streets of Indonesia are doing the rounds on the internet.
It may be noted that earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are common in the country. In 2004, a powerful 9.1 magnitude quake off Sumatra island struck 14 countries and killed nearly 2,30,000 people.
