Track- Earth
Artist- David Andrew Burd aka Lil Dicky
Premiere- April 19, 2019
The Earth had garnered a lot of hype before its release. David Andrew Burd aka Lil Dicky was seen promoting the music video single launch including even the Ellen show. And the good part was, as always we don’t know what to expect from Lil Dicky. He has a knack of always surprising us.
And boy, he did.
You could call the Earth an environmental awareness song. It’s more of that than Dicky’s usually cheeky rap that we love. Dicky has even admittedly told The Rolling Stone that his idea was different. He was thinking about bringing in a handful of huge music stars into the track and midway began making it an environmental anthem. Yes, it was the last thing you expected him to do.
The number of stars who rendered vocal for this song alone is stunning. Here’s the big list:
Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Zac Brown, Brendon Urie, Hailee Steinfeld, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Adam Levine, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth, SIA, Miley Cyrus, Lil Jon, Rita Ora, Miguel, Katy Perry, Lil Yatchy, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, Joel Embiid, Tory Lanez, John Legend, Backstreet Boys, Bad Bunny, Psy, Kris Wu.
Phew!
After a prelude begins with a small tiff between Lil Dicky and a group of little thugs, you see a small boy picking up the trash and putting it back into the can. The mood is set. Then we are introduced to an amazingly cute, animated video of the Earth.
Lil Dicky has roped in leading music stars to render vocals for each animal in the video. If you’ve been wondering, Justin Bieber is a baboon.
Hi, I’m a baboon.
I’m like a man, just less advanced and my anus is huge.
Yes that’s how it rolls. You see the usual Dicky in his element here. Corny humor is his great advantage. And interestingly playing with such lines in an environmental anthem… well it doesn’t make you flinch at all. It’s honest in a Dicky way.
The same goes for the rest of the song. Ariana Grande is a Zebra and asks if she is white or black that unfailingly pricks at racism associated to colour. How more simple can Dicky get with his metaphors? Snoop Dogg, as you guess is a ‘weed’ in the track. Ed Sheeran is a Koala bear. It’s hilarious and drives home the point like a bullet.
Rap takes the back seat in this song. It comes towards the end where Dicky throws around a few lines that gel splendidly and complement the track too good.
But these days it’s like we don’t know how to act
All these shootings, pollution, we under attack on ourselves
Like, let’s all just chill, respect what we built
This rap lines could well have been the synopsis of what Earth single is all about. Most of the track is layered with drums/percussion. Chris Dave has made the song very likeable, listenable and rhythmic.
If you liked Dicky’s Professional Rapper, Ex-boyfriend, then you’ll love this track as well. It carries the same tonal humour albeit with a serious issue at hand- conserving our earth.
If you thought the song will definitely gain enough mileage with such a huge star cast, there’s more. Lil Dicky also brings in Leonardo Di Caprio as a cameo.
And needless to say, Leo confirms it might be his favourite song ever.
