While Sami Zayn's chair strike on Roman Reigns, Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair’s wrestling showcase, and Snoop Dogg’s People’s Elbow on The Miz were all standout moments in themselves in an otherwise memorable year for wrestling, there was really only one that stood out from them all: The Rock’s return to "WWE SmackDown" last Friday.
The comeback video for The Rock, as relayed by WWE, has already garnered 103 million views across various social media and YouTube platforms, making it the most socially viewed video of the year.
Although WWE did not state what video The Rock’s return crushed, Solo Sikoa’s attack on Jimmy Uso during an episode of "WWE SmackDown" in June had crossed 40 million views and was previously ranked as the most socially watched segment of 2023 for SmackDown, according to WWE.
WWE is also continuing to rely on these changing trends by reaching out to even more fans on the video-sharing site YouTube and through social media. Research firm Tubular Labs has found that for the month of July, the age group 13 to 24 spent an outrageous 147.1 million minutes watching WWE videos on YouTube and Facebook, beating all sports teams and leagues for that month. According to Tubular, WWE’s YouTube popularity reportedly trounces that of the closest sports team or league by a whopping 70 percent.
It remains to be seen if he'll make any other appearances at WWE, at least in the near future. But "The Great One" teased a matchup with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. He told The Pat McAfee Show that this dream match was supposed to happen at WrestleMania 39, but it just never happened for some reason.
