Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus. This is a big development just weeks ahead of the US Presidential elections.
"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!" the US President tweeted on Friday morning (IST). Moments later, the First Lady said, "As too many Americans have done this year, @potus & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19. We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together."
Within minutes of Trump making his status official, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him a quick recovery. "Wishing my friend @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @FLOTUS a quick recovery and good health," the PM wrote.
ABC News reported that the news about Trump's status came just hours after it was revealed that Hope Hicks, one of Trump's closest advisers, had tested positive. "Hicks had traveled with the president to Ohio for the debate on Tuesday and to Minnesota for a rally on Wednesday," the publication said.
Already, commentary has begun in the US media over the major development. New York Times said, “Even if Mr. Trump, 74, remains asymptomatic, he will have to withdraw from the campaign trail & stay isolated in the WH for an unknown period of time. If he becomes sick, it could raise questions about whether he should remain on the ballot at all.”
